Rates are fetched from a live market data provider, cached for an hour, and pivoted through USD — so converting, say, INR to JPY internally goes INR → USD → JPY using the current mid-market rate. That's the same rate banks and exchanges reference before adding their own margin.

The rate you see here is a mid-market reference rate, not what you'd get from a bank or exchange counter. Banks and money transfer services build in a spread — typically 1-4%, sometimes more for less common currency pairs or cash exchange at airports — as their margin on the transaction.
