How this calculator works
The discount amount is the original price multiplied by the discount percentage; the final price is what's left after subtracting it. An additional discount, when used, applies to the already-discounted price rather than the original — which is why two stacked 10% discounts add up to a 19% total saving, not a flat 20%.
This is the same math retailers use for "extra X% off clearance" style promotions — useful for checking that a stacked discount at checkout matches what was advertised.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the final price after a discount calculated?
Discount amount is the original price multiplied by the discount percentage; the final price is the original price minus that discount amount.
How do stacked or successive discounts work?
A second discount applies to the already-discounted price, not the original — so two stacked 10% discounts give a combined 19% saving, not a flat 20%, since the second 10% is taken off a smaller number.
Why isn't 20% off plus 10% off the same as 30% off?
Because each discount is applied sequentially to the current price, not added together. 20% off first leaves 80% of the price, then a further 10% off that leaves 72% of the original — a 28% total discount, not 30%.
