How this tip calculator works
The tip amount is simply your bill multiplied by the tip percentage. When splitting between more than one person, both the tip and the total bill are divided evenly across the group — this calculator doesn't account for people ordering unevenly-priced items, just an even split.
Worked example
A ₹2,400 bill split four ways with a 15% tip works out to a ₹360 tip (₹2,760 total), or ₹690 per person. Bump the tip to 20% and the per-person share rises to about ₹720 — a difference of just ₹30 a head for a meaningfully better tip, which is often the easiest way to decide when a bill feels borderline between two tip percentages.
Tipping norms vary a lot by country
In the US, 15-20% is the standard baseline at sit-down restaurants, and tipping below that can be read as a comment on service. In much of Europe, a modest 5-10% (or simply rounding up the bill) is more typical, and service is often already included by law (look for "service compris" in France or "servizio incluso" in Italy). In Japan, tipping can actually be seen as unusual or even mildly rude — excellent service is the default expectation, not something tipped for separately. Splitting unevenly-priced orders
This calculator assumes an even split, which is simplest for groups splitting the bill equally regardless of what each person ordered. If your group wants to split by what each person actually ordered instead, calculate each person's share of the pre-tip subtotal first, then apply the same tip percentage to each individual share rather than splitting the total evenly.
