How this calculator works

The QR code encodes your text or URL directly into a grid of black and white modules, along with error-correction data — that's what lets a scanner still read the code even if part of it is smudged, torn or has a logo placed over it. Higher error correction adds more redundancy at the cost of a denser-looking code.

What the four error correction levels mean

These follow the QR standard's four fixed levels: Low recovers from roughly 7% damage, Medium about 15%, Quartile about 25%, and High about 30%. Medium is a sensible default for most uses. Reach for Quartile or High specifically when you plan to place a logo in the center of the code or expect it to be printed somewhere it might get scuffed, since the extra redundancy is what makes the code keep scanning correctly even with part of it obscured.

Choosing colors that still scan

Scanners rely on strong contrast between the foreground and background to distinguish modules, so keep the foreground noticeably darker than the background — pure black on white is the safest choice, and low-contrast combinations (light gray on white, for instance) can make a code unreadable even though it looks fine on screen. Test any custom color combination with a real phone camera before printing or publishing it.

Static, not dynamic

Everything happens in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere — the code is generated and rendered locally, then exported as a PNG when you download it. This also means the code is static: the destination URL or text is baked directly into the pattern, so if you need to change where it points later, you'll need to generate and redistribute a new code rather than editing this one, unlike paid dynamic-QR services that redirect through a URL they control.
